Laser-ultrasonic (LU) techniques have been widely utilized in the past 
decades to characterize mechanical properties of materials due to their 
indisputable advantages such as their contactless nature or 
investigation of dynamic response in a broadband frequency range (from 
kHz up to GHz). They are based on generation and detection of ultrasonic 
waves by lasers providing thus mainly information of elasticity of 
materials, its anisotropy or frequency dependence.

In this talk, recent applications of LU methods for mechanical 
properties characterization of functional and more complex materials 
will be presented focusing mainly to resonant ultrasound spectroscopy 
(detection of free sample vibrations), transient grating spectroscopy 
(transient diffraction grating generating surface acoustic waves), 
Brillouin spectroscopy (inelastic scattering of light on acoustic 
phonons) and picosecond ultrasound (pump-probe technique with ultrashort 
light pulses).
